The small parish community is scattered around Lake Vyrnwy, Abertridwr and the Cownwy valley.
Originally the village of Llanwddyn was higher up the valley, but was flooded when Liverpool built the dam in the 1880s. Liverpool built new homes south of the dam and rebuilt the Church on the hill north of the dam. Since then the city has built more new homes as the community expanded at Abertridwr, about a mile downstream of the dam.
There is a village school and community centre, which hosts many events including the Post Office on Mondays and Thursdays. The Mobile Library and the Toy Libray also call there. The village shop and newsagent is situated at Abertridwr. The Cownwy valley is a beautiful and peaceful area. There is a small caravan park, a nursery garden and a number of farms, some of which do Bed and Breakfast catering or rent holiday cottages.
The main occupations are sheep farming, forestry, tourism and of course, water.
