Living Stones Heritage Trail — Llwybr Treftadaeth Meini Bywiol |
We continue to build on our vision to establish a Visitor Trail - incorporating a number of historic churches and chapels and possibly other attractions in the Deanery and immediate environs. Our hope is to bring more visitors to an area rich in historical interest and natural beauty which has remained largely undiscovered, and to enhance their experience, exploit neglected assets, contribute to rural regeneration, and support local communities.
Through the Trail we are seeking to raise awareness of the rich heritage of this area and create greater open access for all, whatever denomination and age, to churches and chapels as important community buildings and places of interest.
The Deanery Tourism Group continues to meet and has submitted a number of grant applications for funding towards the establishment of the Trail. Recently, it attracted funding from Powys County Council, via its Community Welcome Scheme, to employ a consultant - Jan Ratcliffe - to produce a report on how the Trail might best be taken forward. As part of this, detailed information about each site on the Trail was produced, together with recommendations on interpretative materials etc. Jan’s work is supporting current and future funding applications as well as being of tremendous practical use in producing information leaflets/materials etc. about the individual churches, chapels and communities involved.
16 sites have been identified for inclusion in the Project, all of which lie along three valleys at the foot of the Berwyn mountains:
Trail One - The Vale of Meifod and Vyrnwy Valley Trail - Churches & Chapels
St Michael, Llanfihangel-yng-Ngwynfa
The Ann Griffiths Memorial Chapel, Dolanog
The John Hughes Memorial Chapel, Pontrobert
Sardis Chapel, Llanwddyn
Trail Two - The Cain Valley Trail - Churches & Chapels
Pendref Chapel, Llanfyllin
Trail Three - The Tanat Valley Trail - Churches & Chapels
